Peoria is the only downstate Illinois city with a museum dedicated to honoring the achievements of persons whom impacted the African American experience. Peoria’s African American Hall of Fame Museum (AAHFM) was formed in 1987 by a small group of civic leaders who had a vision: To educate the community about individuals who have made significant contributions to African American history, culture and society. “African Americans have had a huge impact on the history of this country,” says Junior Watkins, one of the organization’s founders. “To quote Bill Frist, an American physician, businessman and politician, ‘The African American experience is one of the most important threads in the American tapestry.’”
